Sciatica Treatment with Chiropractic

Written By Chapman Health Group on February 4, 2019

If you are dealing with symptoms related to sciatica and looking for the best methods of sciatica treatment, the Chapman Health Group can help.

This article will briefly explain the benefits of chiropractic care for sciatica, as well as better explain the condition and related symptoms.

What Is Sciatica?

The term sciatica, also known as lumbar radiculopathy, usually refers to symptoms associated with irritation of the sciatic nerve. These symptoms can include numbness, discomfort, and sharp or dull pain that can be constant or intermittent.

Sciatic nerve symptoms tend to appear when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the mid-body and split down each leg, is compressed. Symptoms can crop up when a spinal disk bulges, touching or compressing the nerve and causing discomfort, numbness, or pain.

While a bulging or herniated disk does not necessarily cause sciatica symptoms, in many cases, a protruding disk can be the root cause of the problem.

Causes of Sciatica Pain

A number of conditions, including misaligned or bulging spinal discs, can cause sciatica symptoms.

While people can often walk around with bulging discs and feel no discomfort, in other cases, a bulging disc can compress the sciatic nerve. At this point, the patient becomes symptomatic and experiences pain or discomfort.

In other cases, muscular disorders such as piriformis syndrome can cause sciatic pain. This condition occurs when the piriformis – a small muscle on the side of the hip – becomes overly tight due to chronic overuse or excessive sitting. It also occurs because someone is experiencing gluteal dysfunction and the gluteus maximus is not firing properly.

Because a number of different conditions and disorders can cause sciatic nerve pain, it’s crucial for a person experiencing symptoms to be properly evaluated before effective sciatica treatment can begin.

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica Treatment

Chiropractic care – in which misaligned spinal vertabras and the spinal discs are worked back into place – can be a very effective form of sciatica treatment. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) frequently treat a number of conditions caused by or related to sciatic nerve irritation, including herniated or bulging discs.
